7 ways to cut your storage costs
Storage is one of those costs that quietly grows. You take a unit for six weeks, the job overruns, and a year later you are still paying for a box…

The short answer for a Door To Store unit: hire runs from £35 to £140 a week plus VAT depending on size, with a one-off installation fee from £120 plus VAT and the same again to collect it. Delivery is included within 30 road miles of our depot in Luton. Those are the real 2026 figures we quote every day, and this guide walks through them so you can price a unit before you get in touch.
It also covers what a traditional self storage room costs by comparison, what pushes the price up or down, and how to avoid paying for space you will not use.
We deliver eight sizes, all built from the same 2 m steel panels, from a 2 × 2 m unit that fits on a single parking space to a 4 × 6 m unit for a whole house or a building site. Hire is billed every four weeks, and four weeks is the minimum. Prices exclude VAT.
| Unit | Floor area | Weekly hire | Installation | Collection |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 × 2 m | 40 sq ft | £35 + VAT | £120 + VAT | £120 + VAT |
| 2 × 4 m | 80 sq ft | £60 + VAT | £160 + VAT | £160 + VAT |
| 2 × 6 m | 120 sq ft | £80 + VAT | £200 + VAT | £200 + VAT |
| 2 × 8 m | 160 sq ft | £100 + VAT | £240 + VAT | £240 + VAT |
| 4 × 4 m | 160 sq ft | £100 + VAT | £240 + VAT | £240 + VAT |
| 2 × 10 m | 200 sq ft | £120 + VAT | £280 + VAT | £280 + VAT |
| 2 × 12 m | 240 sq ft | £140 + VAT | £320 + VAT | £320 + VAT |
| 4 × 6 m | 240 sq ft | £140 + VAT | £320 + VAT | £320 + VAT |
Two things bring the fixed fees down. Pay six months up front and installation and collection are half price. Pay twelve months up front and they are free. Hire online rather than over the phone and the rental itself is 10% cheaper.
What is not included is any handling of your belongings. We build the unit; you load it at your own pace and keep the keys.
The biggest factor by far. A 2 × 2 m unit at £35 a week is right for a kitchen refit or a garage clearout. The 2 × 6 m at £80 a week takes the furniture from a two-bedroom flat. The 4 × 6 m at £140 a week is the one builders and larger households take, with room to walk in and get to things.
Beyond 30 road miles we add £2 plus VAT per extra mile, each way, for delivery and again for collection. Your quote works this out from your full postcode, so the figure you see is the figure you pay.
Where the delivery address sits inside the central London Congestion Charge zone, the charge is added as a separate line for each visit. There is no ULEZ charge anywhere: our van is ULEZ compliant.
Rolling four-week hire is the most flexible, and the weekly rate does not rise the longer you stay. The savings come from paying up front, as above. Off-hire needs 7 working days’ notice.
The only extra we recommend is Absorpoles, moisture absorbers placed inside the unit that protect fabrics and furniture over winter, at £25 each. The larger the unit, the more we advise.
The Self Storage Association UK’s 2026 annual report puts industry revenue at £27.40 per square foot per year, which works out at roughly £53 a week for a 100 sq ft room on the national average.
On paper the weekly figures are in the same range as ours. The difference is everything around them. With a self storage room you also pay for a van or removals firm to get your things there and back, insurance on top of the rent, and your own time on every visit. With a delivered unit your belongings stay on your own property, you walk out of the back door to get to them, and there is no lorry hire either end.
Our customers tend to describe it the same way. One who kept a 4 × 4 m unit in his garden for a thirteen-month renovation wrote that it was “far more convenient than off site storage, and much cheaper”, and another called it “cheaper than using a self storage facility” for a house-worth of furniture during building work. You can read both on our Google reviews.
Sort before you book, so you hire the size you need rather than the size you fear. Use our storage calculator to check what fits. Decide your end date if you have one and pay the period up front. And measure the route in: we need 2,150 mm of height clearance and a firm, reasonably level spot, so telling us about a low arch or a side gate before the day avoids a wasted trip.
Our 2 × 2 m unit is £35 a week plus VAT, with a one-off £120 plus VAT to install and the same to collect.
Yes, at 20%. Every price on our site is shown excluding VAT, and the quote adds it before you pay.
The installation fee and the first four weeks of hire when you book. Collection is billed at the end.
